Congratulations to Dr Dhaval Thakkar, Dr Miguel Mesa-Guzmán and their teams in an Australian first surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital that has enabled a patient with suspected lung cancer to have biopsies taken, cancer confirmed and removed all in one operation, under one anaesthetic.
Last year, WA received a state-first bronchoscopy robot at SCGH enabling Dr Thakker to locate the cancer deep in the lungs moments before Thoracic surgeon Dr Mesa-Guzman performed the minimally invasive surgery allowing the patient to wake up cancer-free.
We are so proud of the respiratory and surgical teams and proud that the Charlies Foundation for Research was able to help facilitate the bronchoscopy robotic equipment along with McCusker Charitable Foundation, the Institute for Respiratory Health and Future Health Research and Innovation Fund.
